In her marriage to René Angélil, Celine Dion’s heart has continued to go on and on. In an emotional new interview with USA Today, the legendary Canadian crooner opened up about her husband’s longterm battle with throat cancer and his declining health.
Dion, who is returning back to her Vegas headlining stage, was hesitant to return with her husband in such poor health, but he encouraged her to return to the stage. “All my grieving, it was during this last year. I think I’ve got this. For now. When it hits me, it’s going to hit me. But my biggest job is to tell my husband, we’re fine. I’ll take care of our kids. You’ll watch us from another spot.”
The Quebecoise singer met Angélil back in 1980 when she was only 12 years old. They met after Dion’s mother sent a demo to the already established Canadian singer and manger. Before the two became romantic, René was married twice before. With his first wife, René has one son, and with his second he has a son and daughter. Dion and Angélil married in 1994, at the time Dion was 26 and Angélil was 52.
René has served not only as Celine’s husband but also a manager throughout her career. In that time they have had three children. René-Charles Angelil was born in 2001 and twins Eddy and Nelson were born in late 2010.
Dion told USA Today that René-Charles struggles to see his father in such poor health, but for the twins, that is all they know and they are much more comfortable seeing their father in that way.
Angélil, 73, has suffered from throat cancer since the 90s, and his wife has been by his side ever since. While he has undergone various medical procedures, he has remained in relatively good health for most of the time. It was only last year that he had to step down as Dion’s manager due to his poor health.
The singer added the heartbreaking message that her husband said all he wants is to “die in her arms,” and that she’ll be there for him if that what he wants.
