In the past few years, Melissa McCarthy has become one of the ubiquitous forces of female comedy. She caused you to lose your sh*t during Bridesmaids, get a good family chuckle on Mike and Molly and kick some ass in Identity Theft, Spy, and The Heat. We’re not sure there’s any doubts at this point that Melissa McCarthy is bae, but in case there were, she’s just upped her bad-assery one more notch. The upcoming Ghostbusters actress just launched her first fashion line, Melissa McCarthy Seven7. As Refinery 29 notes, the line is much more than a clichéd celebrity fashion line (or fragrance line, or cosmetic line,
or…) in which her name is simply affixed. This is clearly a passion project for the already-legendary comedienne.
She knew very well going in that her clothes would instantly be labeled as plus size, but that doesn’t mean she was simply okay with it. She told Refinery 29:
“Women come in all sizes. Seventy percent of women in the United States are a size 14 or above, and that’s technically ‘plus-size,’ so you’re taking your biggest category of people and telling them, ‘You’re not really worthy.’ I find that very strange.”
The actress added that it doesn’t make much sense economically for stores to continue their current labeling of clothes. “It’s like, if you open a restaurant and you say, ‘We’re primarily gonna serve people that don’t eat.’ It’s like, what? You would be nuts. Yet, people do it with clothing lines all the time, and no one seems to have a problem with it.” There’s that snarky attitude we know and love. Mccarthy added that she was tired of having to shop in a different section than her friends and hopes that her line will be displayed simply in the women’s department, not a segregated plus size area. The clothes run between sizes 4 and 28, and there’s basically pockets on everything.
And just one last reminder that Mccarthy is going to SLAAAAAY when Ghostbusters finally hits theaters. We’re hoping this helps in the meanwhile.
